Major General Simon Hutchings

Director Joint Support, UK MoD

Major General Hutchings is Director of Joint Support (DJS) responsible for: ensuring newly acquired capabilities and services deliver value for money and are an effective support solution; Logistics IS architecture; and, through the Defence Support Chain and Operational Movements (DSCOM) organisation, he is the co-ordinating authority for global movements and strategic outloads planning and execution.

Prior to this, he was Head of the Commissioning and Managing Organisation (CMO) responsible for performance and contract managing the £7.5billion Logistics Commodities and Services Transformation (LCST) programme delivered by Team Leidos.    

Previous roles include: Deputy Chief of Staff 1 Mechanised Brigade, a Supply Squadron Commander and on promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, he was the Land lead staff officer in the MOD Operations Directorate during 2007-2009; the period of ‘double medium’ operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

He later commanded 17 Port and Maritime Regiment RLC and deployed the Regiment to Afghanistan as the Theatre Logistic Group in 2010. Between 2011-2015, as a full Colonel, he was the Assistant Director Logistic Strategy and Plans in Army HQ and the Assistant Head Operations, DSCOM. From 2015 to 2017, he commanded 104 Logistic Support Brigade which comprised over 4,500 specialist support troops providing the UK’s only land theatre enabling capability.

His operational experience includes tours of Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. He has attended both the Advanced and Higher Command Staff Courses and he received an MBE in 2004 followed by an OBE in 2011.

Outside of his role, he has received a MA in Defence Technology from Cranfield University and is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. He also graduated from the SAID/Oxford Business School’s Major Projects Leadership Academy. When not at work, he has a passion for telemark skiing, mountaineering, running and motorsport, although his burgeoning car collection must now be hidden! He is also President of the British Army Motorsport Association, Army Tug of War and RLC Hockey.

Sessions
