Lieutenant Colonel Bill Murray

Deputy Div Chief, Engineer. & Env. Services, U.S. European Command

Lieutenant Colonel William Murray assumed responsibilities as the Deputy Chief ECJ44, United States European Command on 8 July 2024.


LTC William "Bill" Murray is a native of California. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point (Class of 2005) where he played Rugby, taking his commission in the Engineer Regiment.


He has served in numerous command and staff positions including: Combat Engineer Platoon Leader, Clearance Company Commander, Division Planner, Executive Officer to the 2ID CG, Battalion Operations Officer, Brigade Operations Officer, Deputy Brigade Commander, and Battalion Commander.


LTC Murray has deployed in support of combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Additionally, he served in 2-7 Infantry Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division from 2006-2009, 1st Armored Division from 2010-2011, 54th Engineer Battalion from 2011-2014 supporting the 6th Airborne Brigade-Polish Armed Forces in Afghanistan and earned the 2012 Itschner Award for most outstanding active engineer company in the U.S. Army and the USAREUR MacArthur Award for Leadership, 2nd Infantry Division from 2017-2019, 130th Engineer Brigade from 2019-2021, and Fellow at the Daniel K. Inouye Asia- Pacific Center for Security Studies in Honolulu, Hawaii. He most recently served as a Battalion Commander for the Engineer Squadron, 2 nd Cavalry Regiment from 2022-2024.


LTC Murray holds a Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Science in Geological Engineering from Missouri Science and Technology, and a Master of Arts in Operational Art and Science from the School of Advanced Military Studies, Command and General Staff College.


LTC Murray’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster (1 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (1 OLC), Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation (1 OLC), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation, and several service medals. He has also earned the Combat Action Badge.


LTC Murray is married to Tiffany Murray from Cupertino, California. They have two children, Eva (11) and Baron (8).
